1 student killed in shooting at Savannah State University

One student was fatally shot following an altercation Thursday evening at Savannah State University.

The Associated Press noted that the school identified the victim as Christopher Starks, a junior from metropolitan Atlanta.

Witnesses said that after a fight in the student union building, Starks was shot in the collarbone area. Fellow students tried to help him by applying pressure to his wound before EMS arrived. He was transported to a local hospital where died a short time later.

The university was placed on lockdown just before 11:00 p.m. School spokeswoman Loretta Heyward said that lockdown was lifted around 12:00 a.m.

Classes will resume on Friday, but are delayed until at 10 a.m. and grief counselors will be on hand.

So far no arrests have been made. If anyone has any information regarding the shooting they are asked to contact the Georgia Bureau of Investigation or the SSU Police Department who are each currently assisting one another in investigating the case.
