Tennessee schools reportedly served students 6-year-old meat

Several schools in East Tennessee are being investigated after reports that the cafeterias served students six-year-old meat.

The report from WCYB stated that students in the Hawkins County school district were served pork dating back to 2009. At this time, the Board of Education is unsure just how many of the 7,000 students who make up the district’s 18 schools were served the old meat.

The outdated pork was served for lunch just last week even though it was frozen since 2009.

"I'm disappointed the school system let this happen," said Hawkins Commissioner Michael Herrell. "To me, if we've got meat that old, I don't understand why. These high schoolers know when to not eat something, but elementary schoolers -- do they know if meat is bad or not?"

The New York Times noted that Steve Starnes, director of schools, said that the school’s frozen products have been inventoried and anything outdated was discarded.

So far, there have been no reports of any students getting sick. The incident is currently being investigated.
