A mob of thousands of people stormed a high-security prison in Nagaland and killed a rape suspect.
NBC News noted that the incident took place Thursday evening and security staffers at the prison were overwhelmed and overtaken by the number of people.
"Security personnel at the jail were overpowered by the mob," said Nagaland’s chief minister, T.R.Zeliang.
The suspect was a 35-year-old Muslim man named Syed Farid Khan, who was accused of raping a 20-year-old woman on two different occasions. He was dragged out of the prison by the crowd, stripped and beaten to death.
The number of rapes in India are alarming as one is reported every 21 minutes. This week the topic made headlines in the country when it chose not to air a documentary called India’s Daughter. In the film, a man convicted of taking part in the gang-rape of an Indian student blamed the victim for fighting back.
After the mob actions, a curfew was imposed in the area to restore order.
