Judy Blume announces first new novel in over 15 years

Judy Blume, the author of several beloved books for children and adults, will be back with another new novel next year. She announced the details for In The Unlikely Event, her first novel for adults in over 15 years.

The book will be published in June and centers on strange plane crashes that happened near Elizabeth, New Jersey between 1951 and 1952. The crashes are used as the background for a fictional story about friends and family over the span of three generations.

“These events have lingered in my mind ever since,” Blume, who grew up in Elizabeth, told People. “It was a crazy time. We were witnessing things that were incomprehensible to us as teenagers.”

Blume tweeted that she started research on In The Unlikely Event back in 2009. She said that she’s still “polishing” the book, adding, “Will be hard to say goodbye to these characters.”

“Judy has been hinting at writing this book for many years,” the author’s editor, Carole Baron, told People. “And I think she finally got to a point in her life when she couldn't hold on to the story any longer.”

Blume is known for books like Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret, Deenie, Wifey and her Fudge series. You can pick up her new book on June 2.
