Martin Sheen to star in BBC drama about disaster that inspired ‘Moby Dick’

Acting legend Martin Sheen has signed on to star in a BBC One drama about a maritime disaster that inspired Herman Melville to write Moby Dick.

The two-hour film is called The Whale and will air on Animal Planet next year in the U.S., reports http://www.deadline.com/2013/11/martin-sheen-stars-in-bbcanimal-planet-film-about-whaling-disaster-that-inspired-moby-dick/>Deadline. Sheen will play Thomas Nickerson, who recalls his adventure as a young boy on a whaling ship called the Essex, which was on a journey that ended in disaster. The journey reportedly inspired Moby Dick.

According to The Mirror, the young Nickerson is played by newcomer Charles Furness and the rest of the cast includes Jonas Armstrong and Paul Kaye.

The Whale, written by Terry Cafolla, was already filmed in England and on location in Malta. Sheen told the Mirror that they had planned to film in Malibu, but he decided to take the trip to London, since everyone was there already.

“I thought it might be better for me to come here because they had done the film here, all the players were here, all the people who were involved were here and so I would fit in better here than them having to come to the States and make it all work,” the Apocalypse Now actor said.

Sheen recently filmed scenes for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and also appeared on his son Charlie Sheen’s Anger Management.
