Pharrell Williams thinks "Blurred Lines," which he co-wrote with Robin Thicke, does not sound similar to "Got to Give It Up."
As previously reported, Williams, Thicke and Clifford Harris Jr. filed a preemptive lawsuit to protect their song "Blurred Lines" after Marvin Gaye's estate threatened their own suit.
Marvin Gaye's family believes that the song is too similar to "Got to Give It Up."
Pharrell responded to claims saying in an interview with The Associated Press, "If you read music, all you have to do is read the sheet music."
The singer feels that Gaye "is the king of all kings, so let's be clear about that. And we take our hats off to him."
He added, "But anybody that plays music and reads music, just simply go to the piano and play the two. One's minor and one's major. And not even in the same key."
According to Los Angeles Times, listeners feel that the song's use of cowbell and a bass line is similar to the 1977 R&B song by Gaye.
The AP notes that Pharrell has done well this year, also being a part of another big summer jam, Daft Punk's "Get Lucky."
