Made in Texas: 20 famous actors from the Lone Star state

3. Debbie Reynolds

Mary Frances Reynolds was born on April 1, 1972, in El Paso, Texas — the second child of Maxine N. (Harmon) and Raymond Francis Reynolds, a carpenter for the South Pacific Railroad. Her career began at the age of 16 when she won a beauty contest.

Reynolds breakout role was in Singin’ in the Rain (1952) where she partnered with Gene Kelly and danced for the first time.

Her recording of the song “Tammy” from the film Tammy and the Bachelor (1957) was number one on Billboard charts that year.

At the 31, she received a nomination for her first Academy Award for her performance in The Unsinkable Molly Brown (1964)

Not only was she a screen and stage actor-singer, her voice is heard as Charlotte in Charlotte’s Web (1973).

Reynolds’ dream of opening a Hollywood Museum took most of her fortune. Her remarkable vintage collection featured more than 3,000 costumes and more than 46,000 props and equipment.

In January 2015, Reynolds received the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award.

Debbie Reynolds died on December 28, 2016, of a stroke one day after losing her daughter Carrie Fisher.
