This song was written in 1926 and first published in 1927. Many versions were to follow, but the most noted was the 1960 version by Elvis. The spoken part, loosely based on Shakespeare’s As You Like It, was not introduced until 1950. In versions to follow, the inclusion of the spoken part was not consistent. Though Elvis did include the spoken part, in his live performances, beginning as early as 1961, he would change the words and have some fun with them. Elvis could be quite the comedian when he wanted. His 1960 recording is one of the best-selling singles of all time.
