Legend tells that Simon based Felix Ungar on a visit to his recently divorced brother who lived in California. After staying with his brother he got the idea. He dramatized the character of course.
Another rumor is that it was based on a divorced Mel Brooks who lived with Speed Vogel. The interactions Simon witness was the basis for the characters. Whatever the truth is, it is a classic show.
