Patrick Duffy (Bingo America - 2008)
If you thought Carrie Ann Inaba was a random choice GSN made when choosing someone to host one of their original game shows, wait to you watch the clip below. If you were obsessed with Dallas in the late '70s and throughout the '80s, you should be made well aware that Bobby Ewing decided to make a big career switch by moving on from the oil industry to host a game of Bingo on television. After thinking long and hard, Bobby Ewing decided that it was time to leave the Southfork Ranch and venture on to new horizons, mainly sunny California and to a television studio that features a giant Bingo ball dispenser. For those of you who are completely lost right now, Bobby Ewing was a character on the popular nighttime soap opera Dallas and was played by Patrick Duffy. In 2008, Duffy was the host of GSN's Bingo America.
Bingo America was one of the few game shows that GSN actually offered a decent grand prize on because each contestant had a chance to win $100,000. In fact, two people ended up winning the $100,000, one on the first season hosted by Patrick Duffy and another on the second season hosted by former Family Feud host Richard Karn. The main game was simple. Two contestants competed in answering trivia questions in hopes of completing the letters B-I-N-G-O on the board in front of them. Before each question is asked, a ball is dispensed from a giant orb. If a player answers a question correctly, they receive the letter attached to the ball and the number on the ball is transferred into dollars and gets added to the bank. Two games win the match, all the money in the bank and the chance to play the bonus round for $100,000.
Overall, the show was decent, but most importantly, Patrick Duffy was actually a decent host. He explained the game well, he was very charming and despite not having any prior game show hosting experience, he seemed very comfortable and confident while being the emcee of Bingo America. The best part about Patrick was that he didn't try to act like a game show host, he didn't try to get over excited, but instead was himself and hosted the show with a sense of grace. It was surprising to see that he was getting replaced for the second season of Bingo America because Patrick genuinely felt like a good fit for the show. GSN's reasoning for Karn becoming the new host was that he was a better fit for the second season changes being made, however, there really weren't that many changes for season two besides a new model and a different bonus round. Although Richard Karn proved himself to be a good host when doing Family Feud, Patrick Duffy deserved the opportunity to host the second season because he was a very good newcomer to the hosting scene.
