Mark McGrath (Don't Forget The Lyrics - 2010)
The final name on this list is, as mentioned above, a musician known for being in a band. However, unlike Joey Fatone who was in a boy band, this guy is a rocker. From the band Sugar Ray, it's Mark McGrath, and in 2010, he was made the host of the music-based game show where years of singing in the shower could pay off to the tune of $50,000, Don't Forget The Lyrics. One year after FOX canceled the original version of the show with host Wayne Brady, Don't Forget The Lyrics was made into a syndicated half-hour show just like another FOX game show turned syndicated a year prior, Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?
The main idea of the game stayed the same when Mark McGrath took over in that contestants had the choice of two songs for each level and after choosing one, the host would reveal how many lyrics they had to correctly identify. The contestant would then sing along to the song with the lyrics appearing on a giant screen. When the music stopped, a number of blanks appeared and that was when they needed to fill them in. However, with only half the time and a non-network budget to work with, the game did need some significant changes. The money ladder only featured five rungs as opposed to the nine-rung $1,000,000 money ladder on the prime time version. A contestant faced five songs and as the game progressed, the number of lyrics they had to correctly sing increased. Correct lyrics means the contestant advances up the money ladder. Incorrect lyrics means they stay where they are and must complete that level of the game over, losing out on the highest money amount at that point.
Fans of the current version of Let's Make a Deal know that Wayne Brady is a strong host, and was just that when hosting Don't Forget The Lyrics. However, Mark McGrath held his own when he was the master of the microphone. While the game format certainly suffered with the changes, McGrath was a solid host, bringing his energy as a rock band frontman to the television screen. He had so much support for all of his contestants and you can tell by his natural excitement that he genuinely wanted everyone to win big. It was so much fun watching him dance, jump and jive while the contestants sang and if given the chance, you know Mark would take his shot at playing the game and have just as much fun. If the format was more like the FOX version, it had a shot of lasting longer, but McGrath was certainly not its downfall. Mark McGrath definitely deserves the opportunity to host another game show because not only is he a talented musician, but he is also a talented host.
