5. Blockbusters
The top five game shows on this list are true classics, each of which have been hosted by legendary emcees and are all favorites among the game show community. Four out of these five game shows have had a revival in the past, and two of the five were actually revivals of previous game shows under a different name. It would be a thrill to see any or all of these game shows included in today's classic game show reboot line-up. The number five game show that should get a revival is Blockbusters, originally hosted by the king of game show hosts, Bill Cullen. No, this game show has no association with the defunct video rental chain, but instead was a fun quiz show that aimed to answer the age-old question, are two heads really better than one?
On the original 1980 to 1982 version, a solo player competed against a family pair on a 20 hexagon space board. Each hexagon contained a corresponding letter of the alphabet, which was the first letter to the correct answer of a question. To win a game, the goal of the solo player was to connect hexagons from the top to the bottom on the game board, which could be done with as few as four spaces. The solo player had to connect hexagons going from the left to the right of the game board, which could be done with as few as five spaces. Spaces could be captured by buzzing in first and answering the question correctly. Whoever won two games won the match and the chance to play the "Gold Run" bonus game for $5,000.
Blockbusters is an all-around fun game to play along to, even for those who might not be the greatest at answering trivia questions. Since the initial of every correct answer is displayed, it's a significantly easier game to play than, say, Jeopardy!. So, for those who don't like to watch "America's Favorite Quiz Show" because they feel embarrassed by not knowing any of the episode's material, Blockbusters is a perfect game for you. The 1987 Bill Rafferty revival featured two individual players, but if Blockbusters gets a second revival, it needs the element of a solo player vs. a family pair because that's what makes this show unique. Most shows are either one on one or two on two, but Blockbusters stands out by seeing if one person can take down the combined knowledge of two individuals. If Buzzr were to ever produce their own game show revivals, Blockbusters should be the first show on their list to bring back.
Brad Fact: Blockbusters was one of the two game shows NBC used as a replacement for David Letterman's failed morning talk show, The David Letterman Show. The other was Las Vegas Gambit, a Sin City revival of the classic game show hosted by Wink Martindale.
