John McEnroe (The Chair - 2002)
There have been a number of bad game show hosts introduced in the 21st century, but this sports figure probably ranks as the worst game show host from the year 2001 on. Actually, it might be more accurate to say that this person is one of the worst game show hosts of all-time. He is so entertaining to watch on the tennis court, but it was dreadfully painful to watch him ask trivia questions. He is New York City's own John McEnroe.
Back in 2002, high stakes, big money prime-time game shows were still the rave. If the concept was as suspenseful and dramatic as ABC's mega-hit Who Wants To Be a Millionaire, chances are the show was going to make it on television, no matter how outlandish and over-produced the game would eventually become. That certainly was the case when ABC decided to air The Chair.
The Chair was basically Millionaire's famous hot seat on steroids. Contestants sat in what could be described as the dentist chair of doom trying to win $250,000 by answering seven multiple choice questions. Before the show, each contestant underwent extensive heart monitoring to determine their resting heart rate, and throughout their time playing the game, their heart rate was also being monitored. When McEnroe finished reading a question, if the contestant's current heart rate was above the determined heartbeat number, they were not allowed to answer the question and lost money per second. If the money ever reached zero, meaning the contestant's heartbeat count was too high for the amount of time given to answer the question, their game was over.
Just from the description of the game, you can probably tell why this show didn't last too long. In fact, four episodes went unaired.
However, the game itself wasn't the only problem. If you want to watch the definition of "fish out of water" just watch John McEnroe host a game show. He tries to act as serious as the show wanted to be viewed as, he basically just goes through the motions of asking questions and reading the words on the teleprompter and, to be honest, McEnroe doesn't even seem like he's enjoying being the host of the show. It was awkwardness at it's best, especially when the contestants lost and McEnroe put on the persona of feeling saddened for them.
John McEnroe is an ace at the game of tennis but definitely was a fault at hosting a game show.
