Chris Jericho (Downfall - 2010)
Now it's time to focus on the sports figures who decided that they needed a new kind of game in their lives. You might assume that sports figures could be great game show hosts because they are used to performing in front of a crowd and their natural drive to compete and win could bring out their excited personality if a contestant wins big. Well, those assumptions are often times misleading as many sports figures have turned out to be game show hosting duds. You'll meet two of those duds shortly, but first is a sports figure that truly shined as a game show host, to the point that he is probably one of the best game show hosts the 21st century had the offer. It's too bad his show only lasted for one season because he was a breakout star in the emcee scene. He is professional wrestler Chris Jericho and the name of the show, Downfall.
For quite some time, ABC has had the distinction of producing great summertime game shows, and Downfall was definitely one of them. The game takes place on top of a 100-foot building and if contestants aren't able to answer a specific number of questions in time, potential prizes, lots of money, a loved one or even their own self might make their way to the bottom of the building via a moving conveyor belt, a harness and gravity. That's right, Chris Jericho hosted a game show where replicas of fabulous prizes fall off the side of a building and are completely smashed into millions of pieces on the ground below ... isn't that a match made in game show heaven?
For the five episodes that aired, Chris was such a delight to watch. Although not much was given away across those five episodes as there were some logistical flaws within the gameplay, this is definitely a show that deserves a second chance, especially because of how good Jericho was. From the moment he stepped out on the stage to intro the show, you can feel the excitement and energy he brought to the game and it honestly felt like he was thrilled to be there.
Chris did a great job explaining the game and reading the teleprompter, which many game show hosts today are terrible at. He always seemed to be having fun and it was a joy watching his genuine reactions when contestants won a round or when they ended up losing. His smile is contagious and so is his hosting style.
Chris Jericho definitely deserves to host another game show, and if he gets another show "under his belt," he can be a force in the emcee industry.
