Al Roker (Celebrity Family Feud - 2008)
Back in 2015, Celebrity Family Feud premiered on ABC with host Steve Harvey as part of their summer line-up. However, this wasn't the first time Celebrity Family Feud joined a network summer line-up in the 21st century. Ten years ago, in 2008, Celebrity Family Feud was a six-episode weekly summer series on NBC. Currently, Steve Harvey hosts both the syndicated version of Family Feud and the celebrity version. However, John O'Hurley, the host of the syndicated Family Feud in 2008, was not the host of the NBC celebrity spin-off. Instead, Celebrity Family Feud was hosted by Today Show weatherman Al Roker.
The format of the show is different from how the current version works. Two celebrity families competed in game one, two additional celebrity families competed in game two and the winning families faced-off against each other in game three where the winning family got to play "Fast Money" for $50,000 for their favorite charity. This version featured many famous faces leading their families in the Feud, including Bruce Jenner playing with Kris, Kim, Kourtney and Khloe. If you recall, Kim played with her hubby Kanye West on the current season of Celebrity Family Feud's premiere episode, and Kris and Khloe played on the opposing team. So, the Kardashians had Feud experience before their over-advertised, over-hyped 2018 appearance.
Now let's focus on Al Roker as a host. Overall, he was okay. Not the greatest Family Feud host ever, but definitely not the worst. However, Mr. Roker is much better at giving us the weather forecast than giving us number one answers. Al actually had some game show hosting experiencing prior as he emceed MSNBC's Remember This? from 1996 to 1997. As the host of Celebrity Family Feud, there were moments where he felt out of place and seemed like he was just going through of motions of how he thought the host of Family Feud should act, such as always saying the words "show me ..." when revealing answers in the main game and being surprised with large "Fast Money" answer totals. It's tough hosting a game show that is so iconic and has had many previous hosts.
Al Roker and Family Feud didn't click as well as NBC maybe wanted them to, but with the right show, Al could be a decent game show host. Unfortunately, he gets a strike for Celebrity Family Feud.
