I really didn’t want to put this at No. 1, but there really is nowhere else to put it. This is Spielberg’s magnum opus, a film that pays tribute to the men that fought in the war, but also a serious look at its cost.
Obviously, there are so many others that could be on this list. The Best Years Of Our Lives is the best film about soldiers’ experiences when they come home. A Matter of Life and Death is probably the best British film made during the war. Since You Went Away deserves a shout-out as an important film on the experience of women during the war.
