God gave rock 'n roll to you, God gave rock 'n roll to you...
It’s been 27 years since we’ve seen our favorite pare of lovable idiots step into a time travel machine, but Bill & Ted are preparing to make their grand return.
While it’s been rumored for years and years now, Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter are officially signed on to star in Bill & Ted 3 — which is now named Bill & Ted Face the Music.
Directed by Dean Parisot (Galaxy Quest) and written by Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon, Bill & Ted Face the Music will follow the middle-aged duo as their still struggling to come up with the song that’s going to save the entire world. Apparently, the one at the end of Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey isn’t cutting it anymore.
Unable, to come up with the lyrics, one of them gets a great idea: let’s just travel into the future and steal the song from ourselves.
“What follows is a kind of utterly absurd, Christmas Carol-like journey through their lives past, present and future,” Solomon said via Slash Film.
He went on: “It’s been 30 years. Let’s be real about the passage of time. We want to maintain the tone, the sweetness, the absurdity and we want it to be a movie that is not just for fans of the first movie but hopefully for people of any age who haven’t seen the movies. But most importantly, we want it to be something unique — something people haven’t seen before. Also, we think it’s really cool to take characters you last saw as teenagers and explore them again as middle-aged men. What would that be like?”
Winter also made some comments to Entertainment Weekly, saying that the previous Bill & Ted movies have had “an anachronistic quality to them that’s a big part of what they are, fundamentally. I’m really happy that this one is the same. It doesn’t feel like some stale knockoff that a studio would have immediately gone, ‘Oh, this feels right. We have rebranded very successfully.’”
Steven Soderbergh is attached to executive produce the project, with Scott Koopf, Alex Lebovici and Steve ponce producing.
And I couldn’t be more excited about the news. Upon hearing about the announcement, I spent my Friday night watching both Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey and instantly fell in love with the franchise (Bogus Journey is the better of the two, and I’ll fight anyone who tries to tell me different. The scenes with Death killed me every single time, and I really hope he appears in Bill & Ted 3). There’s definitely still more room to explore with these characters, and I can’t wait to see what crazy adventures they’ll get into next.
A specific release date has not yet been set for Bill & Ted Face the Music, but Solomon is hopeful production will start after Reeves finishes John Wick 3.
Are you excited for another Bill & Ted movie? Have you seen the other movies, or is this the first time you’ve ever even heard of Bill & Ted? If you have, which one was your favorite? Let us know in the comments below!
