Minneapolis St. Paul Film Festival: Reviewing the showcase of independent films

Supa Modo

Director: Likarion Wainaina

Summary: This movie is about a 9-year-old girl named Jo (Stycie Waweru) who’s living with terminal cancer in a small village called Maweni. Her condition doesn't keep her from giddily playing with her favorite superhero figurine and dreaming of being a superhero herself. Her mother does sometimes get in her way, though, because she thinks the best course of action for her daughter is to save up her energy so she might get better. Her sister Mwix, though, thinks Jo should just do whatever makes her happy, so she enlists townspeople to create situations where Jo can seemingly save the day.

My take: This ties Sing Song for my favorite film of the festival – and unsurprising, the two were neck and neck for the popular vote. Supa Modo came out on top though with a win for the Youth Jury Award. Like Sing Song, Supa Modo was bright, positive and full of lively imagery thanks to a consistently colorful pallet on top of always busy backgrounds – from a bustling village, to a yard of animals, a lush field, a heavily decorated room in a house or village store.

I don’t know the actors, but they made me feel like I knew their characters, like I was one of them. Their pain was my pain, Jo‘s joy was my joy. Just thinking about the movie again stirs so many emotions. Although the plot is rooted in cancer, the film manages to be about life instead of death and its heart is a combination of lessons needed perhaps now more than ever: that girls can be heroes too and deserve to see themselves as such and represented in the arts that way; and that everyone gains something when a community comes together to help someone in need, whether in a small or big way – compassion and unity is everything. It’s a feel-good, gem of the freshest and most sincere kind.
