Let the speculation begin now.
Solo: A Star Wars Story is only about two months out at this point. We’ve still only seen one 90-second trailer. We all know the drama that went on behind the scenes with the film — Kathleen Kennedy replacing Phil Lord and Chris Miller with Ron Howard and all that.
Much of the online speculation has suggested that Solo is going to crash and burn.
But then, here comes Disney, trying to change everyone’s expectations: the film is now going to be debuting at one of the most prestigious film festivals in the entire world, the Cannes Film Festival.
A couple things to clear up here: while the film will be screened on May 15 (fun fact: the same day as this writer’s birthday), it won’t actually be entering the competition. That means you aren’t going to be seeing “Officially selected by the Cannes Film Festival” on any of the marketing or anything like that.
Also important to note is that this isn’t the first time Star Wars has premiered at Cannes. both Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones (2002) and Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith (2005) played at the festival in their respective years. And we all know how those movies turned out…
Still, you have to hand it to Disney for having some guts with this movie. They know the reputation Solo has, and they also know what kind of crowd Cannes is — serious movie lovers who have been known to boo or even walk out of films they disprove of. If everyone comes out of Cannes praising Solo, it could be a complete game-changer for the movie.
Solo: A Star Wars Story will make it’s official release 10 days after the Cannes screening, on May 25. Cannes, meanwhile, is scheduled to run from May 8 to May 19.
