Celebrities and Activists form NoRA to fight NRA

The Time is Now

Celebrities and activists all across the U.S. have teamed up to form the NoRA, or No Rifle Association, in an attempt to take on the National Rifle Association (NRA) and the elected officials who support and/or accept money from the NRA.

On Friday, the NoRA penned a letter to NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre outlining their pledge to take down the influence of the NRA in politics by campaigning in votes around the country as well as art campaigns and boycotts.

The NoRA is a group of concerned citizens that run on private donations. The group has gained over $25,000 since February.

Over 100 people signed the open letter. The list includes standouts like David Hogg, a survivor of the Parkland shooting in Florida on February 14 and actress Alyssa Milano.

Milano told TIME her thoughts on the campaign:

“I am the mother of two children. To see what’s going on in this country as far as gun violence, and the lack of real fortitude to do anything about it, is keeping me up at night... “To see these Parkland kids doing what they’re doing, to get up there, to be so brave, to be so open and really take the initiative to try to fix this is great, but they need support.”

Other celebrities that signed the letter include Alec Baldwin, Jimmy Kimmel, Amy Schumer, Don Cheadle, Julianne Moore, Jon Favreau, Nathan Fillion, Patton Oswalt, Jeffrey Wright, Constance Wu, founder of the #metoo movement Tarana Burke and many other influential figures.

The NRA has yet to comment on the letter or the opposing organization.

“When like-minded people come together for the common good and for a cause they believe in,” Milano said, “they can move mountains.”
