5. Oprah was the first black news anchor at WLAC-TV

Everyone begins somewhere, and for Oprah that was as a news anchor at Nashville’s WLAC-TV where she was both the youngest news anchor and the first black female news anchor in the early 1970s. She later moved to Baltimore’s WJZ-TV as a co-anchor of the six o’clock news.

She went on the do a couple more co-anchoring and co-hosting jobs for a few years. Then in 1983, Oprah relocated to Chicago to host WLS-TV’s low rated half-hour morning talk show, AM Chicago. Within a few months time, she took the show from last place in the ratings to overtaking Donahue as the highest rated talk-show in Chicago.
