Elton John turns 71 March 25: here are 5 things to love about him

4. Elton John saved Eminem's career

Around February 2001, as the Grammys were ramping up Eminem was in deep.  The Marshall Mathers LP was a huge hit in 2000 and while it was in contention to win awards, it was also at a see-saw point for Eminem due to what critics said were homophobic, violent and misogynistic lyrics. Protestors were literally at the Grammy's with signs saying "Award Music, Not Hate."

Elton John, being a creative musician, instead saw the deranged Slim Shady as a comment on the darker side of life.

Seeing what was happening to another musician, when asked to perform "Stan" with Eminem at the Grammy's, said yes. It is one of the most classic duets in Grammy history, according to the Rolling Stone.

While some may disagree, Elton John has convinced enough people to accept Eminem as being a person who accepts diversity and that his fellow artist was playing music about controversial subjects such as violence and entrapment in poverty and domestic abuse, while also commenting on the intolerance within that environment.
