Circa the 1990s Elton John declared his homosexuality, which made him the first male pop star to publicly state that he was gay.
He came out despite a previous announcement in 1976 that he was bi-sexual to Rolling Stone which negatively impacting his career. Hate mail poured in saying things like he was a pervert and fans boycotted his albums.
As one can see Elton John was very brave on both occasions, especially in 1976 since it was a time of rigid sexual identity. Although in the 1990s (still with much progress to go) he had a more receptive public reaction and also really said his true sexual orientation.
John's announcement has led the way for the LGTBQ community today. Without Elton's and other's bravery, we would still be within a rigid frame of mind concerning sexual identity. A thumbs up to Elton.
