The 1972 drama was based on the William H. Armstrong novel of the same name. The story was about a boy, his poor family, and his dog named Sounder, living in the South. Tyson plays the boy's mother in the film. For her role, she was nominated numerous times for various awards, but wound up winning three: 1972 National Board of Review Award for Best Actress, 1973 National Society of Film Critics Award for Best Actress, and the 1973 Kansas City Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actress, where she tied with Katherine Hepburn for The Trojan Women.
