‘Black Panther’ continues record-setting box office dominance

Black Panther easily had no problem remaining at the top spot of the box office during its second weekend.

The latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe brought in $108 million during its second weekend. It is only the fourth film in history to bring in over $100 million during its second weekend. It also delivered the second largest second weekend of all-time only behind 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Black Panther is already the fifth highest grossing title in the MCU and is about to pass Captain America: Civil War and Iron Man 3. It is also now one of the top 30 domestic releases of all-time after being released for only ten days.

The new comedy Game Night opened in second place with $16.6 million. The film did receive some decent reviews and it obviously faced tough competition going against Black Panther. I do think this film will remain in the top five for another week.

Peter Rabbit dropped one spot to third place with $12.5 million. The film only dropped 28 percent during its third weekend and passed $70 million domestically.

Annihilation opened in fourth place with $11 million. The sci-fi thriller starring Natalie Portman based on the popular novel received mixed reviews and it will be tough for this film to remain in the top five against tough competition.

Fifty Shades Freed round out the top five with $6.9 million. The film is closing in on $90 million domestically and the film has crossed $320 million at the worldwide box office.

The other new wide release Every Day opened in ninth with $3.1 million. I predict this will be the only week this film remains in the top ten.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle ($5.7 million), The 15:17 to Paris ($3.6 million), The Greatest Showman ($3.4 million) and Early Man ($1.7 million) round out the top ten.

I believe Black Panther will remain box office champion for a third straight week as it does face some competition including Jennifer Lawrence’s new thriller Red Sparrow.
