African-American actresses who paved the way in Hollywood

 10. Angela Bassett

Angela Bassett, the Golden Globe award-winning actress, made her first appearance on television in 1985 in the movie Doubletake and she's definitely a powerful African-American actress you should know. Bassett gained steam in the film industry in the early '90s for her roles in Boyz in the Hood (1991) and Malcolm X (1992). But before the fame, Bassett attended Yale where she received her bachelor’s degree in African-American studies and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Yale school of drama.

Her shining moment came when she reprised the role of Tina Turner in What’s Love Got to Do with it in 1993. Basset won a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for her portrayal of Turner.

Bassett is also known for films like How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Waiting to Exhale and Akeelah and the Bee. She’s currently an L.A. street cop in Fox’s new TV series 9-1-1 and stars in the Ryan Coogler Marvel film, Black Panther.
