In the early 1800s of the United States a free black man, Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), who is well to do is kidnapped from upstate New York and experiences the horror that was the antebellum south. Northup confronts the nefarious evils of the slave owners who purchase him, (Benedict Cumberbatch, Micheal Fassbender) and depicts the duality of human motive.
After 12 years he gets introduced to a Canadian abolitionist Bass (Brad Pitt) and escapes, which allows him to tell his story of slavery through his memoirs.
