10 Oscar-winning movies from the past decade you can't miss

8. Avatar

Written and directed by James Cameron, the box office hit was a nominee for Best Picture in the 82 Acadamy Awards in 2010, but won three Oscars for Best Achievement in Cinematography, Visual Effects and Art Direction.

In Avatar paraplegic Marine Jake Sully replaces his murdered twin brother to go on a space colonization mission to the far-off world of Pandora. And the humans on Pandora have been up to good as they try to exterminate the native humanoid "Na'vi" so they can steal valuable minerals that occupy the same space as the Na'vi. To get his legs back, Jake spies on the Na'vi by embodying an artificially created Na'vi body so he can interact and infiltrate the native population. The thing is, Jake, like any hero, has a conscience and grows ties with the Na'vi and falls in love with the beautiful alien Neytiri, played by Zoe Saldana.

As the story progresses and the policy of exploitation intensifies, Pandora gets into some serious heat. The movie was not only a visual blast but was wonderfully written and well cast, on top of reminding viewers of former efforts of colonization.
