1. Arrival
Directed by Denise Villeneuve and written by Eric Heisserer, and based on the story, Story of Your Life, by Ted Chiang, this movie was nominated for seven Oscars at the 89th Academy Awards last year in 2017, including Best Picture, but only won one for Best Achievement in Sound Editing, certainly an underscore.
The sci-fi classic is an exploration of humanity confronting the next step in evolution as Linguistics professor Louise Banks, Amy Adams, heads a project to interpret the cryptic language of alien beings who arrive all over the world.
Helped by fellow colleague Ian Donnely (Jeremy Renner) they have to quickly rush as the clock ticks while the globe goes to pieces. The aliens and Banks learn to interact as the film delves into how communication and the lack of it can either lead to peace or misfortune.
