1. “Hang the DJ” (Episode 4)
When we watch Black Mirror, we typically suspect sad or unsettling endings that serve to provide social commentary about our world rather than give actual resolution to its characters. In Season 3, “San Junipero” (which is still my favorite episode to date) turned that idea on its head by delivering us something completely different — a love story. Now, “Hang the DJ” is here to do it again. There’s still technology and implications at play — a young couple (Joe Cole and Georgina Campbell) meet through a futuristic dating app, only to be told that they aren’t allowed to stay together forever. But it’s the chemistry and connection between the two, and where the story ultimately goes that keeps us on the hook. It sounds crazy to say that a show that once had an episode about a man having sex with a pig can make us feel so much, but “Hang the DJ” hits us right where it hurts.
Tell us, in the comments below, what you agree and disagree with? Which one did you like best of the bunch? What’s your favorite Black Mirror episode of all time?
