5. Full Metal Jacket (1987) — Dec. 1
Stanley Kubrick’s war film is another one that defies all genre conventions. This isn’t your typical ‘let’s go America! kill the bad guys!’ kind of war movie. No, Full Metal Jacket takes a long, hard look at the psychological and dehumanizing effects that war — specifically the Vietnam War — can have on somebody. It’s a tough watch, but it’s incredibly well made and also features one of Vincent D’Onofrio’s best performances to date (it’s up there with Wilson Fisk, at least).
