The Chainsmokers: 5 songs you cannot miss from

“Closer” – featuring Halsey

It feels too obvious and cliché to put this in the top spot, but you can’t argue with the facts. “Closer” is The Chainsmokers’ top hit in every way. The Atlantic reported in November 2016, that it was the longest-running No. 1 song in the country that year, and one of the longest No. 1 songs of all time. It tied or broke several other industry records, it’s the band’s most popular Spotify song and it was the song of the 2016-17 school year. If there was a group of teens or 20-somethings together in any given setting during that time frame, chances are they played this song over and over and over. And if those young people made a video of their time together – this is the song they chose.

What makes it so special? Well to put it simply, it’s got everything that makes their other hits great, all rolled into one – and then some. It opens with a mystical, balladic sound similar to “Paris,” throws in some snap-like tunes to lighten it up, then picks up the pace for the chorus. Bolstered by the juxtaposition of including both the male and female vocals (Taggart and a stellar Halsey), the lyrics tell the story about running into an ex, lamenting the breakup together with nostalgic sentimentality, and passionately expressing a desire to reconnect – and to freeze time on that happy youthful feeling and experience. The pain and hope in the story embodies the two-pronged spirit of young people in today’s current social environment.

Bottom line: the song transcends its parts to create one perfect sum that could never be played too much, and will never be forgotten.
