Harvey Weinstein: Some of the brave women coming forward with allegations

The Blade Runner star was forced to deal with Weinstein’s sexual advances while working on the Miramax film Love Crimes in 1992. Speaking to the Dudley and Bob with Matt Show podcast, she described an incident when she “personally experienced him pulling his you-know-what out of his pants.” Young’s reaction was perfect — she said “You know, Harvey, I really don’t think you should be pulling that thing out, it’s not very pretty.”

It’s sad. It’s sad that this news took this long to surface, and that the victim list is this long. These twenty women aren’t even the full picture of Weinstein’s misdoings. It’s sad that, while Weinstein is now facing the repercussions of his misconduct, there’s no way to truly capture the amount of pain he forced on to others. And it’s sad that Weinstein is only one man in an entirely corrupt system and world. There are far too many like Weinstein out there who, realistically, may never be outed or face the same amount of public shaming that Weinstein has gone through. Those who simply get away with this kind of thing. That’s the saddest part of all, I think.

However, maybe it doesn’t have to be quite so sad. Maybe the claims against Weinstein can be the start of a new era where women aren’t forced into these situations again and again. Maybe now is the time when we can rise against this kind of behavior together and say that it has no place in this business. Jennifer Siebel Nesom’s Huffington Post article had another quote that I really liked, saying: “Women have been exposing this ‘secret’ for years and reporters have been trying to report his predatory behavior for years. But perhaps those in power now finally recognize there must be consequences for men like Harvey. There must be consequences for behavior that systemically harms and oppresses women. And if the consequences can’t or won’t be won in the legal realm (as has yet to be the case for any of the men mentioned above, not to mention the culprit-in-chief, our current President) then at least their reputations, powerful perches and business opportunities should suffer. Right? I mean, shouldn’t good trump evil in the end?”

That’s the hope. While we may not have the power to change the world single handily, we can do our part to build towards that vision. Don’t shy away from this news. Listen to the victims coming forward. Believe them. And, should you be a victim yourself, know that we 110% support you.
