Blade Runner 2049 won the weekend box office, but finished well below expectations. The sequel to the 1982 film Blade Runner brought in $31.5 million. This is very disappointing considering the film was projected to finish around $50 million domestically.
The film did receive positive reviews and is hoping that the film’s audience will continue to grow, especially with the film also opening in international markets over the next few weeks.
The Mountain Between Us opened in second place with $10.1 million. The drama starring Idris Elba and Kate Winslet also received positive reviews and I'm predicting that this film finishes in the $30-40 million range domestically.
It dropped to third place this week with $9.7 million and has now crossed $300 million domestically after 31 days. The film is also about to pass $300 million internationally which now makes it the largest international horror release of all-time.
My Little Pony: The Movie opened in fourth place with $8.8 million. Kingsman: The Golden Circle rounds out the top five with $8.1 million and is closing in on $80 million domestically.
American Made saw a 52% drop during its second weekend and brought in $8.1 million as it crossed $30 million domestically. Victoria and Abdul jumped into the top ten finishing in eighth place bringing in $4.1 million and is slowly creeping past $6 million domestically.
Blade Runner 2049 will have a tough job repeating as box office champion as we have four new wide releases opening next week on Friday the 13th, including the horror film Happy Death Day.
