Offering to Marry Mary Hawkins
Having the naïve young woman Mary Hawkins marry Alex Randall’s sadistic brother Jack was scary enough, even though Claire predicted that his demise would happen before he could hurt his brother’s true love. In order to protect Mary, Murtagh gallantly offered to marry her himself. While Claire gently turned down the offer as Murtagh has no money nor station, and the death of Jack Randall would ensure her future and the birth of Frank’s direct ancestor, she did soften the blow by agreeing that he did an excellent job being godfather to Jamie.
