Murtagh was so upset that he let down Jamie by failing to keep Claire safe when she and Mary Hawkins were attacked that he had to be urged to go on.  Once it was discovered that it was in fact the duplicitous Duke who had ordered the attack, without any trepidation, Murtagh took his axe and with a few swift blows removed the Duke’s wig-less head and laid justice at the feet of Claire.  Therefore he made good on the revenge he promised.
