David Letterman’s mom who appeared on his late night talk show passes away

David Letterman’s mom, who fans remember from her appearances on his long-running late night talk show, has passed away. She was 95.

The Associated Press noted that Dorothy Mengering's death was confirmed by Letterman's publicist, Tom Keaney, on Tuesday, April 11.

Mengering instantly became a hit when she appeared via satellite from her Carmel, Indiana, home for a Thanksgiving segment on the Late Show with David Letterman called "Guess Mom's Pies."

She made appearances for Mother's Day as well and since she was so popular, Letterman had her as a special corespondent for 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway. She then went on to do the Winter Games in Nagano, Japan and Salt Lake City and even had a segment for the London Olympic Games.

"After Lillehammer, I couldn't believe how it all took off," Mengering said in 1996. "I think it's about the idea of mom and of a family."

Dave's mom was also featured in some of his famous "Top 10" lists.

Stephen Colbert, who took over the Late Show for Letterman, tweeted out his condolences after hearing about her death.

Sadly, the news of her passing came just one day before Letterman's birthday. The funnyman turns 70 today, April 12.
