‘Boss Baby’ sneaks past ‘Beauty and the Beast’ at the box office

It was a very close race at the box office this weekend which saw DreamWorks Animation’s The Boss Baby beat Beauty and the Beast for the top spot.

Boss Baby brought in $49 million which is the 10th largest opening for DreamWorks Animation reports Box Office Mojo. The film looks to be on pace to finish around $150-$175 million domestically.

Beauty and the Beast fell to second place with $47.5 million and the film is closing in on $400 million domestically after only 17 days. The film is keeping a similar pace to 2008’s The Dark Knight, which grossed $533.3 million domestically.

Ghost in the Shell finished in third place with a rather disappointing opening of $19 million. I expect this film to finish around $50 million domestically. Power Rangers came in fourth place after taking a 64 percent drop during its second weekend. The film brought in $14.5 million and passed $65 million domestically.

Kong: Skull Island rounded out the top five with $8.8 million and is closing in on $150 million domestically. Logan brought in $6.2 million and has grossed $211.9 million after 31 days. Get Out came in seventh with $5.8 million and is closing in on $160 million domestically after 38 days.

The new releases from last week took significant drops. Life came in eighth place with $5.6 million while CHiPS came in ninth place with $4 million as the film has yet to cross $15 million domestically. The Zookeeper’s Wife rounded out the top 10 and brought in $3.3 million.

The Boss Baby will have some competition next weekend to retain the top spot at the box office as three new wide releases are coming out including the comedy Going in Style, starring Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman.
