5. Could Justin find redemption?
The whole downward spiral of this mystery started with Justin lying about Hannah and turning her first kiss into a tawdry tale that sullied her reputation. Then, he was complicit in the rape of his girlfriend Jessica by Bryce. He was reluctant to believe that such a close friend was capable of his brutal assault, even though he was there when he did it! Justin could go to jail for that, and should be punished for the emotional abuse he put Hannah through, and probably countless other girls too, but his life may continue a little better than he was before.
However, he is a product of a terrible family life. Despite this upbringing and previous misdeeds he did seem to want to make things up to Jessica, and while it is too little too late, he may be able to become a decent human being. He seems to be genuinely sorry for allowing Jessica to be raped and will always be guilty for his dastardly deeds, but perhaps he will get that athletic scholarship and become a better person? To heed Clay's words, "we need to start being better to each other." Maybe the aftermath of the release of the tapes will lead him to make some positive changes in his behaviors, attitudes and actions. Maybe.
