2. The Gift (Season 5, Episode 22)
The biggest bad the show had yet to have, Glory, wants to go back to the hell dimension where she came from. Dawn’s blood is the key to opening the dimension and that means that she has to die. In one of the most emotional season finale’s, Buffy realizes that she can save her little sister if she sacrifices herself. Dying for the second time in the series, the episode shows the toll that slaying takes, not only on the slayer, but on her loved ones as well. Before she jumps, Buffy offers Dawn a line of advice, “The hardest thing in this world is to live in it.”
One of the most tear-jerking episodes of the series, the audience is offered a small laugh at the end in the form of Buffy’s tombstone. The epitaph reads “She saved the world. A lot.”
