Selena Gomez accuses Disney Channel of being the 'biggest high school in the world'

In a new interview, Selena Gomez revealed that she was bullied during her days on the Disney Channel.

The star started her career on Barney, but eventually made her way to Disney Channel. In fact, some may still refer to her as Alex Russo from Wizards of Waverly Place.

Despite Gomez's popularity and fame, she still dealt with the same issues presented in Jay Asher's young adult novel, Thirteen Reasons Why. She felt the insecurities that the main character felt. Asher's novel is about a young girl, Hannah Baker, who leaves behind a cassette tape of 13 people who led her to commit suicide.

Compelled by this dark novel, Gomez and her mother sat down with Asher and negotiated the rights to this novel.

According to The New York Times, the actress shared that she attended the "biggest high school in the world, which is the Disney Channel."

She also predicted that it was because of this that Asher gave her the rights.

"I think he understood that I knew what it meant to be bullied," Gomez shared.

She further explained how open her mom has been about being bullied herself. Gomez's mother personally shared that as she grew up, she was always bullied because she was the outsider.

Gomez's mom explained that she was "the weird girl with the purple hair and combat boots."

And then she became a teen mother and was judged by many people. In fact, Gomez's mom remembered the counselors who told her she ruined her life, her child's life and her family's life.

It can be assumed that Disney is unhappy with hearing Gomez's accusations about the network. It can also be expected that they are not satisfied with hearing the treatment of their actors compared to a novel about a teenage girl's suicide.

Despite the hardships Gomez faced in her life, she triumphed.

Asher's novel is expected to premiere as a new series on Netflix starting March 31.
