‘Logan’ easily dominates the weekend box office

Logan had no problem claiming the top spot at the box office this weekend with a very impressive $85.3 million opening weekend. This beat The LEGO Batman Movie for the best opening weekend of 2017 and this film will continue to be a success domestically and internationally. I saw the film this weekend and thought it was fantastic and one of the best comic book adaptations ever.

Logan easily beat the $53.1 million opening of 2013’s The Wolverine and it has the fifth all-time best opening weekend of the X-Men franchise reports The Wrap. This film should have no problem becoming the highest grossing film of The Wolverine trilogy.

Jordan Peele’s thriller Get Out fell to second place after only a 22 percent drop and brought in $26.1 million to reach $76 million domestically. This film should reach $100 million domestically next weekend. The Shack finished in third place with a $16.1 opening weekend, which was better than expected. It will be interesting to see if the film can maintain an audience over the next few weeks.

The LEGO Batman Movie came in fourth place with $11.7 million and has now grossed $148.6 million after 24 days. It is currently the highest grossing movie of 2017 but we are still very early into the year with many blockbusters still left to be released.

The final new release of the week Before I Fall rounded out the top five with $4.9 million. John Wick: Chapter Two has passed $80 million domestically while Hidden Figures is approaching $160 million domestically. Fifty Shades Darker currently stands at $109.9 domestically and it doesn’t appear that it will surpass its predecessor.

I predict that Logan will repeat as box office champion but it will have some tough competition from the upcoming adventure film, Kong: Skull Island.
