Fears Chella throw it back to the '90s on 'Girlfriend'

Picture a swarm of adoring fans clad in Doc Martens and leather jackets, willingly queueing all day for a front-row spot in their favorite club venue. This the future of Fears Chella.

U.K. newbies Fears Chella recently dropped a single fit for the opening credits of your favorite '90s teen rom-com. Lovesick lyrics and an irresistible melody make this single a top contender for pop-rock bop of the year. The Stoke/Manchester based band is following the lead of their friends Pale Waves with a calibrated combination of indie-rock, pop and grunge. “Girlfriend” is a dreamy tune with an edgy twist. Though they have a distinctly British sound, this is a band that could be playing crowded shows in Lower Manhattan in no time.

Fears Chella began like any other indie band with big dreams, playing dusty basement shows and house parties. They quickly attracted the attention of BBC Radio 1’s Huw Stephens last year with their debut track, “Cool.” It isn’t surprising this band is growing popular in the U.K. - if you listen closely, you can detect hints of the lo-fi vibes of Wolf Alice and Circa Waves. Fears Chella was also slated as part of the Unsigned Guide’s Spotlight series last fall, an impressive feat for such a young band. It’s a tough climate for independent artists in an era too obsessed with the over-hyped antics of Taylor Swift and the Chainsmokers. Despite the uncertainty of the modern industry, Fears Chella are making the most of their time on the road.

With their angsty, energetic, and infectious sound, Fears Chella have the potential to be a huge underground sensation. Catch "Girlfriend" below and keep your eyes on Twitter and Facebook for more!
