4. The Napping House by Audrey Wood
“There is a house, a napping house, where everyone is sleeping.”
In a book where literally every character is asleep, you wouldn’t think the story would be so enthralling. The real joy of this book is not in the story, but in the repetitive, song-like rhyming of the narration and the fun, detailed, and life-like images that illustrate the napping house. The illustrations by Don Wood are comical and each page foreshadows what will come next, teaching kids to think ahead. The Napping House won the ALA Notable Children’s Book Award, is Golden Kite Award winner, is a California Young Reader Medal winner, and is a Booklist Editors’ Choice.
