Best and worst moments in the ‘Beauty and the Beast’ remake

4. Belle's mother's backstory

While the scene in Paris felt unnecessary, Belle’s mother’s backstory was still valuable information. Although the backstory does not have much to do with Belle’s character arc, it fills in the blanks of why Maurice is such a lonely man. A very touching moment is in the beginning of the film when Belle walks in on her father singing to himself and fixing a music box in which he has painted his dead wife. The story is very touching and explains why Maurice is so protective of his daughter.
