‘Beauty and the Beast’ has a record breaking opening weekend

The live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast has been highly anticipated and it delivered another record-setting weekend for Disney.

The film brought in $170 million, the largest March opening weekend ever beating 2016’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice total of $166 million. The film is also the record holder for the largest opening for a PG-rated movie, beating the $135 million set by last year’s Finding Dory reports Box Office Mojo.

Kong: Skull Island took a 53 percent drop during its second weekend and brought in $28.8 million to raise its total domestic gross to $110.1 million. Logan continues its successful run and finished in third place with $17.5 million and has now passed $180 million domestically.

Get Out remains in the top five after 24 days and brought in $13.2 million raising its total domestic gross to $133.1 million. The Shack rounds out the top five with $6.1 million and has passed $40 million domestically.

The Belko Experiment was the other new wide release and it performed around what was projected. The horror thriller brought in $4 million and came in seventh place.

The Lego Batman Movie is closing in on $170 million domestically after 38 days while Hidden Figures passes $165 million domestically after 85 days.

Beauty and the Beast will have some competition next weekend with three wide releases including the reboot of the popular Power Rangers franchise.
