‘Beauty and the Beast’ destroys box office with $170 million debut

Beauty and the Beast may have just won the spot for the biggest film of 2017.

The latest live-action adapted Disney film smashed movie records for March. The fairy-tale story set new box office records for both the biggest March opening and PG-rated movie releases. Variety reports that Beauty and the Beast made a record number of $170 million, already making back its big budget costs of $160 million.

Last year, Captain America: Civil War took first place for the biggest box office opening of 2016, raking in a remarkable $179 million. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice took second place with a $166 million opening. Other well anticipated 2017 movies like Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 will have to do extremely well if they aim to beat Beauty and the Beast for 2017’s No. 1 film.

Beauty and the Beast follows Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella and The Jungle Book in Disney’s adaptation strategy. Next, Disney is in the works to bring a live-action Dumbo and Mulan to the silver screen.
