M. Night Shyamalan’s Split continues to have success as it retains the top spot at the box office for the third weekend in a row.
The film dropped 43 percent during its third weekend and brought in $14.6 million and is close to crossing $100 million domestically. This is the first Shyamalan movie since The Sixth Sense to spend three weeks at the top box office spot reports Box Office Mojo.
The new horror film Rings came in second place with $13 million. This is the worst opening in The Ring franchise and it was just shy of the $15.2 million that The Ring brought in back in 2002. A Dog’s Purpose dropped to third place with $10.8 million. Hidden Figures continues to have a very impressive box office run. The film came in fourth place with $10.1 and has now grossed $119.4 million.
La La Land rounds out the top five with $7.5 million. Resident Evil: The Final Chapter brought in $4.5 million and it seems that this film will probably have the worst box office performance of the franchise. Oscar contender Lion expanded to wide release and came in eighth place with $4 million and has grossed $24.7 million after 73 days.
The other new release The Space Between Us just made the top 10 coming in ninth place with $3.8 million. It doesn’t seem like this film is going to remain in the top 10 very long. xXx: The Return of Xander Cage came in 10th place with $3.7 million and has crossed $40 million domestically.
Next weekend has a variety of new releases including two sequels, Fifty Shades Darker and John Wick: Chapter Two. I’m predicting that Fifty Shades Darker will take down Split as box office champion.
