It was the best weekend so far at the 2017 box office and it was led by a trio of new releases. The LEGO Batman Movie took the top spot this weekend with $55.6 million. This was slightly below expectations and slightly lower than the $69 million that The LEGO Movie delivered back in 2014. I still expect this film to have a successful box office run and even pass $200 million domestically.
Second place went to Fifty Shades Darker which brought in $46.8 million. This was way behind 2015’s Fifty Shades of Grey which brought in $85.2 million during its opening weekend reports Box Office Mojo. The film should continue to find an audience especially with Valentine’s Day this Tuesday. Third place went to John Wick: Chapter Two. The sequel brought in $30 million, which is an improvement from the $14 million opening weekend of John Wick back in 2014.
Split dropped to fourth place with $9.3 million and has passed $110 million domestically. It is close to passing The Village and will rank as M. Night Shyamalan’s fourth highest domestic release. Hidden Figures rounds out the top five with $8 million. It has brought in $131.5 million, the highest grossing domestic release of the 2016 Best Picture nominees.
A Dog’s Purpose ($7.4 million) and Rings ($5.8 million) finished in sixth and seventh place. La La Land brought in $5 million and is closing in on $130 domestically after 66 days of release. Lion rose a spot to ninth with $4.1 million. The Space Between Us finished 10th with $1.8 million. I predict this will be the last weekend some of these films spend in the top 10.
The top spot next week should be interesting with three more new releases coming including the new action movie The Great Wall starring Matt Damon.
