When you thought the musical crossover of The Flash and Supergirl could not get any better, it was announced that there will be original music for the television event penned by a darling of The CW and the award-winning duo behind the lyrics in La La Land.
We already know who will be singing in the crossover and that Glee alum Darren Criss will be taking on the role of the villain, The Music Meister. But now, it's been confirmed that Crazy Ex-Girlfriend's Rachel Bloom and songwriting duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul will contribute music to the two-day event.
Bloom told Buzzfeed about the song she wrote for the crossover and how it came to be.
“I immediately offered them [Executive Producers Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg] my services. As soon as they picked one of my song ideas, I hopped on the phone...and we brainstormed and, based on that brainstorm, I wrote up the song ‘Super Friend.’ I am so excited to contribute more to the upward trend that is musicals in television and film. Also, it was really fun to write a comedy song for two superheroes.”
"Super friend" will be a duet sung by Grant Gustin and Melissa Benoist in The Flash's episode, aptly titled "Duet," as reported by TV Line.
This episode will also feature an original song penned by La La Land's lyricists Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. The song is called "Runnin' Home to You" and will be sung by Grant Gustin.
Pasek and Paul are also known for their musical theater contributions, including Dogfight, A Christmas Story (for which they were nominated for a Tony Award) and the new Broadway hit Dear Evan Hansen.
The composing duo have won a Golden Globe for writing the lyrics to "City of Stars" for La La Land and are nominated for two Academy Awards, for writing the lyrics to "City of Stars" and "Audition (The Fools Who Dream)," both from La La Land.
The CW has recruited some great talent for this crossover. But we will all have to wait until March 20, for the beginning of the crossover on Supergirl and March 21, for the rest of the musical fun on The Flash.
